As one of the most used spaces of the home, the bathroom generally experiences more hits than an ARIA music chart. With the end of the year almost upon us, there is no better time to give it some much-needed pampering with a bathroom mini makeover! And, here’s how to do it.
How much time do you spend in your bathroom? The answer obviously depends on the number of household occupants and their individual grooming habits, however let’s delve a little further into this conundrum.
Assuming that the average person showers or bathes at least once a day, taking a minimum of five minutes to clean and dry themselves each time. Over a week (using some very conservative figures, as no doubt some of us would take longer that the said 5 mins!) this would equate to 35 minutes of bathroom time.
Okay, not too impressive so far. But, if we extend that over the course of a month; we are in the bathroom for 140 minutes. Annually, these original five minutes equate to 1680 minutes of bathroom time (28 hours!). And that is just for the showering/bathing! This does not include the additional time taken to use the toilet, wash and dry hands, apply make-up, or style our hair! It is pretty safe to say, based on this assumption, well in excess of an entire day of our lives is spent annually in the bathroom just to make ourselves squeaky clean.
The bathroom certainly sees its share of activity in the family home. With all this activity it’s important to keep the bathroom clean and organised. So, just in time for the silly season to kick in and as you prepare for the visitors to arrive aplenty, following are our Highlands Handpainting tips on how to give your bathroom a mini refresh.
De-clutter and storage review
If you find your bathroom has acquired more cosmetics and gadgets than your kitchen cutlery drawer, perhaps it could do with a clutter overhaul.
Go through your bathroom cabinetry and get rid of anything that you been keeping for a rainy day; expired tubes of hand cream, hair gel you don’t use anymore or the fourth pair of nail clippers you scored in last years’ Christmas bonbon.
De-cluttering provides a better idea on how much additional storage your bathroom really needs; if any. If you find you could do with some extra storage space, following are some inexpensive ways to incorporate extra storage into your bathroom.
Bathroom shelving
Free up some bathroom vanity space by hanging a simple display shelf on the wall to cater for smaller items like creams, lotions and cosmetics that are used regualrly. A neat shelf like this one from Kmart will set you back only five dollars and would do the trick perfectly.
To get items off the shower floor, get a good-quality suction shelf to house your wet pampering products such as shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. A suction shelf can be removed from the wall just as easy as it is installed. Check out the range of suction shelves available at Bunnings here.
You can incorporate a standalone shelf to take care of towels and larger items too. Kmart stocks a range of these tiered shelves that are super handy. As an ultimate space saver, you could also hang a towel hook on the side of a tiered shelf.
Bathroom caddies
To keep organised (and reign in the clutter) bathroom caddies are a great bathroom addition. Add a caddy to the vanity benchtop to re-organise the space a little better. Or, introduce a caddy or two to your new bathroom shelving.
Revive and refresh
Like we mentioned earlier, bathrooms get knocked about. Here are a couple of cost-effective ideas to revive your bathroom fixtures and fittings.
Bathroom vanity
If your bathroom vanity is showing its age, give it a fresh look with a surface re-paint. A professionally painted bathroom vanity can add instant spritz to your bathroom. This is generally more cost effective than replacing the cabinetry in its entirety so makes a great option for a quick update. Or for a more substantial transformation, installing a brand new vanity can really update the look of your bathroom space without having to completely overhaul the entire room.
Bathroom splashback
A glass splashback is a great way to brighten up your bathroom. The reflective nature of glass creates a feeling of depth too, which is ideal for more intimate-sized areas. If your bathroom is lacking some sass, a splashback can help bring it up to date.
If a splashback is not really on your radar, a strip of wallpaper could add some interest to the vanity area instead.
Towel rack or hook
Hooks and racks are relatively easy to remove and install. If space is of the essence, you could consider changing a towel rack to a couple of hooks to hang your towels. Alternatively, transform the look and feel of your existing bathroom fittings by modernising your towel rack to a newer model.
Colour and texture
A drab bathroom can easily be revived with a pop of colour or interesting texture. New towels, a new soap dish and toothbrush tumbler, or a fresh, green succulent in a planter can often make all the difference.
A mini home refresh is just that – mini. The cost of reviving your bathroom does not need to be excessive on your hip pocket nor your time. These simple ideas are perfect for any sized budget and space.
