Christmas is one of the only times of the year where we often create more mess inside the home than a mouse hunting for cheese. But Christmas décor does not need to be an eyesore. You can have your Christmas cake and eat it too with some subtle Christmas décor. Here’s how!
Christmas décor is fun, vibrant, full of character and cheer. But it does not need to be cluttered and messy (unless of course, that is how you love it – it is Christmas after all!). Along with its usual charisma, Christmas décor can still be fun and festive whilst also being elegant and minimalistic. It is all in the execution.
So, for the minimalistic at heart, how do you add touches of Christmas magic to your home without the clutter? You ask the experts of course
Here at Highlands Handpainting, we love a bit of Christmas décor magic. And, at this gifting time of the year we thought we would spread the Christmas cheer. Following is our teams’ list of favourite Christmas décor pieces, mess aside.
Candle Magic
For many people candles are a typical inclusion in the home and they make great Christmas décor pieces. If you are one of these people, all you need to do is turn your usual candles into something a little festive or swap them for a new colour completely. Red, green, gold and silver make the list of traditional Christmas décor colours. But you can choose any colour you like for these beauties.
Pink, blue, white, purple and other colours work just as well as the traditional shades. For instant Christmas décor simply add some small floral pieces such as poinsettias, pinecones and greenery or a small bow to the bottom of the candle or around the candle holder. Just remember to remove it before lighting the wick to avoid to potential for any nasty accidents.
Cushions
Cushions are another common home décor piece and can be changed up as often as one pleases. To make it festive, use some colours that will match with the rest of your Christmas décor. You can also purchase Christmas-themed cushion covers, like these ones on Etsy, if you really want something extra special.
The beauty with this Christmas décor option is that cushion covers fold flat so they take up less storage space when not in use. Neat, tidy and highly effective – we love our Christmas cushions at home.
Bows
Bows go to Christmas like Superman goes to tights; just seamless really. They make perfect Christmas décor pieces as they can be fixed to pretty much anywhere you please.
With a few rolls of ribbon, you can tie some oversized bows on the top of curtain rods, fixed to door handles and on kitchen cabinetry, on the back of chairs, and even left sitting on display cabinets and tables. Bows are a versatile Christmas décor piece so easily achieved and very budget-friendly.
Christmas Lantern
To me, there is something about lanterns that just ooze Christmas décor charm. And with the rise of styling trends like Hamptons, coastal chic and modern farmhouse, a lot of people have a lantern laying around the home already. To add some Christmas magic all you need to do is change up its contents a little.
For a summer Christmas vibe add a sprinkle of sand inside the lantern and some shells sprayed with glitter paint. A Christmas bauble or two will finish the look perfectly.
For a more traditional Christmas décor look and feel, you can wrap floral garlands or tinsel around the bottom of a candle and vase inside the lantern. Alternatively, wrap your chosen decorative pieces around the outside base of the lantern – easy!
Baubles
You can’t have a Christmas without baubles at least somewhere in the house. These spheres of Christmas magic would have to be one of the most versatile Christmas décor options around. Renowned for dangling proudly on the Christmas tree, baubles make excellent Christmas centrepiece options too. You can make a Christmas décor masterpiece with baubles and whatever else you have on hand.
Here are a few Christmas décor centrepiece ideas using baubles:
- place a few handfuls of Christmas baubles into a glass serving dish, serving platter or bowl
- fill some empty mason jars or wine glasses with mini Christmas baubles and arrange them together to create a centrepiece
- hand paint an old wooden fruit crate and fill it with baubles
Suspended Hoop
For an uber-impressive Christmas décor piece, try creating your own chandelier. Getting Christmas décor off the tabletops and cabinets, a chandelier creates impact without taking up precious space and cluttering up the room.
Here’s some ideas on how to make a Christmas décor chandelier using a hula hoop and a few basic extras:
- simply wrap a hula hoop in a small string of battery-operated LED lights then hang it from the ceiling
- wrap a hula hoop in ribbon or rope then dangle beads and Christmas decorations from it (for inspiration click here)
- create a web on the hula hoop with twine. Then hot glue a Christmas message to the twine when done. Use this DIY Christmas wreath for inspiration
Christmas décor does not need to be abundant or over-the-top. A few simple touches here and there will ensure your home oozes just the right amount of Christmas magic this festive season.
The Highlands Handpainting team love creating our own Christmas décor as a fun activity that gets the kids and family involved.
We wish you and your loved ones a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
